A brief summary of Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (History)

Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) is a local non-profit organization founded in 1979 as a branch of the Arab Family Organization in the Gulf region, aiming to advance the Arab family and develop the social services it needs. SCHS was authorized under decree number 6/1981 issued by the Government of Sharjah on March 11th, 1981.

SCHS’s vision is to be a leader in advocacy, inclusion, and empowerment for persons with disabilities in the United Arab Emirates and the Arab world. It strives to reduce the causes of various disabilities through early intervention and community outreach. SCHS is an advocate aiming at the inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities through education, rehabilitation, and job placement to shape independent, self-reliant individuals in society.

SCHS has several branches, centers, schools, and departments such as: Al Amal School for the Deaf, Boarding School, Department of Speech Therapy, Al Wafaa School for Developmental Training and its branch in Al-Ramalah area with daytime and nighttime school which are dedicated to severe and multiple disabilities, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Department, Vocational Rehabilitation & Training Department, Center for Early Intervention, Sharjah City Audiology Center, SCHS Khorfakhan Branch, Al-Thaid Branch, Kalbaa Branch, Sharjah Autism Center, Emirates Special Arts Group, and Sharjah Social Empowerment Foundation “Tamkeen”.

SCHS relay on donations, gifts, revenues of activities, and school fees to cover for its everyday expenditure. In the last academic year, the number of students receiving direct services has reached 1200. On the other hand, more than the double of this number received indirect services such as aiding tools, insurance, and healthcare. These services are provided by a qualified cadre of more than 470 workers and employees.

Bee’ah launched the Bee’ah School of Environment (BSOE) on 6th October 2010, supported by the Sharjah Education Zone (SEZ) and sponsored by various corporate partners. It is a bilingual (English and Arabic) environmental education initiative that consists of a range of engaging, fun and interactive environmental lesson plans that are designed to be applied in classrooms. The material can be downloaded from www.bsoe.ae and integrated into existing curricula.

The Sharjah Environment Awareness Award is an ongoing competition designed to help teachers coach pupils on environmental responsibility using Bee’ah School of Environment programmes and activities. Those schools actively involved their students in a range of creative and educational projects, in all aspects of the environment including preserving natural resources, reducing waste disposal, conserving water and protecting biodiversity.

Application to the awards are open to all schools within the Emirate of Sharjah from nursery to grade 12. After the submission of school portfolios, all nominations will undergo two rounds of rigorous selection by the judging committee comprised of representatives from Bee’ah and the Sharjah Education Zone. They will thoroughly evaluate all submitted nominations based on originality and creativity, relevance to the chosen theme and quality of their report, and then conduct visits to the shortlisted schools to witness for themselves how those projects have been implemented.

In 2012, Bee’ah School was awarded “Best Environmental & Awareness Educational Initiative” by the Green Middle East Awards for Environmental Excellence.

Babyshop is a one-stop store for kids of all ages – from newborns and toddlers to tweens and teens up to the age of 16. Incorporated in 1973, Babyshop has more than 170 stores in the region.

Babyshop have consistently demonstrated high commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility through child safety awareness campaigns. Titled ‘Child Safety First’, this initiative began in 2005 based on a detailed understanding of the routines of infants, toddlers and kids, as well as what they come into contact with every day.

Dubai Refreshments (DRC) is a landmark in Dubai in more ways than one! Strategically located on interchange number two on the busy Sheikh Zayed Highway, the brand Pepsi is one of the first sights for visitors entering the city. More significant is the fact that the company effectively introduced the Pepsi range of products to the UAE and has been doing the same successfully for over 45 years.


The business began as a limited liability company by Decree of His Highness, The Ruler of Dubai and in July 1994, it amended its status as a Public Shareholding company. In 1962 DRC was appointed as the sole franchisee and distributor for Pepsi Co. The company’s vision has always been to be one of the lower Gulf’s leading beverage companies, driven by top caliber people, equipped with the right tools and solid systems. A wide distribution network ensures Pepsi products are readily available to customers all over the UAE and the world.

DRC has benefited from as well as contributed to the success and economic growth of this country. It has sponsored various events under the flagship of Pepsi such as Dubai Shopping Festival for the last 10 years as well as various sporting and cultural events such as The Pepsi Sports Fiesta – which includes a 5 a side football tournament, a 6 a side cricket tournament and a street ball basketball tournament.

Other involvements include International Tennis Tournaments, the Dubai Little League Baseball the Dubai World Cup horse races, high profile concerts held in Dubai with A and B Grade music artists and various football tournaments providing support and assistance to the player and the organizers. Over and above this DRC also takes a very proactive stance a corporate citizen and regularly supports charities, environmental concerns and cultural bodies.
